Effective Acne Scar Treatments

Effective Acne Scar Treatments

People often seek treatment for scars if they are itchy or painful, if they are ugly, or if they restrict movement.

Although acne scars cannot be removed completely, they can be made less visible with ace scar treatments. In case of severe acne scars, your GP may refer you to a skin specialist or a plastic surgeon.

Some acne scar treatments are not available on the NHS, so you need to pay for them privately.

Here are some of the effective acne scar treatments:

Silicone Gels or Sheets

Silicone gels or sheets are used to heal acne scars by reducing the redness and minimising the hypertrophic scars. To be effective, place a silicone gel over the scar for 12 hours per day. You will notice improvement within three months of regular use.

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroids are used especially when the acne scars are serious. Small amount of corticosteroid is injected into the scar tissue to reduce the swelling and flatten the scar. The repetition of corticosteroid treatment depends on the severity of the acne scar. This type of acne scar treatment may sometimes continue for several months.

Laser Therapy

One of the effective acne scar treatments is laser therapy. It helps reduce the redness in the scar by working on the blood vessels present in scar tissue. The top layer of the skin is removed, which helps stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. There are long-term studies that have proved the efficacy of laser therapy.

Superficial, low-dose radiotherapy may reduce the recurrence of the scars after cosmetic surgeries. It is found to be effective in around 70% cases. However, it is only advised to people with scars caused by nodular acnes.

Acne Scar Creams

Although there is no medical evidence, Vitamin E-based skin cream can help manage acne scars. Moisturising skin with Vitamin E cream can help nourish the skin and prevent the formation of acne scars. Scars are very sensitive to sun, so sunscreen can be useful to protect them. There are other creams such as Freederm Fast Track Formula that can help fight dark spots caused by acne, leaving the skin look healthier.
